Natural Heartburn/Acid Reflux  Cures with Nutmeg

Although I've put this heartburn/acid reflux cure under the label 'nutmeg', there are a few other ingredients that are needed to be included for it to work. The other two main ingredients are mace and slippery elm. Whilst nutmeg may be found amongst your daily kitchen herbs and spices, I'm pretty sure that slippery elm and mace won't be.

Since both of these latter herbs are a little more unusual, let's take a quick look first at what they are. Mace is a derivative of the same fruit as nutmeg - the "Myristica fragrans". Its flavoring is similar to nutmeg and it is actually the lacy covering over the shell of the nutmeg. Nutmeg as we all know, is the fruit seed which is held within a dark brown, brittle shell, with the nutmeg itself being glossy and brown.

Slippery Elm on the other hand, refers to the inner bark of the Slippery Elm tree. It's very rich in nutrients and is usually bought in the form of a ground powder. If you can't find it in your local grocery, then try your local health store as they should have it, or if not then they should know where you can get it.

This remedy is not quite as straightforward to make as the other remedies we've talked about so far, but it is still reasonably simple to do.

Combine one teaspoon of slippery elm bark with a pinch of nutmeg and a pinch of mace, and add enough distilled water to make a smooth, slurry mixture. Also bring a pint of half-and-half to boil. (Yes, I know this sounds strange as normally milk can bring on heartburn, not cure it, but many people find this remedy works for them.)

Once the half-and-half has boiled, remove it from the stove and add the herb slurry to it, stirring it in completely. Then allow the mixture to cool. Drinking half a cup of this mixture usually cures your heartburn when it strikes. As you don't drink the entire mixture at once, store the unused portion in the refrigerator and warm up the next cup when you need it.

The reason why this remedy works is because it contains a lot of alkaline nutrients, and alkaline tends to provide, more often than not, relief from heartburn.
