Walking as a Heartburn/Acid Reflux Cure

Walking as a preventative treatment is a bit more controversial than some of the other remedies covered. It can either help prevent heartburn/acid reflux, or it can help cause heartburn. Now, we'll look at how walking can help alleviate heartburn.

Walking after a meal can lessen the chance of heartburn/acid reflux occurring. No, I'm not talking about the heart-racing marathon type of walk. What I'm talking about is going for a gentle stroll after your meal. So put your sneakers away and get out a nice pair of comfortable shoes.

By taking a slow walk, you are aiding the natural digestive abilities of your body. As the acids associated with heartburn are produced mainly to help with your food digestion, the quicker you can get your food to digest, the less time the acids will be in your stomach. It follows that the less time the acids are in your stomach, the less chance they have to escape.

The other benefit that walking brings you is gravity. By standing up rather than sitting or lying down after a meal, you're making use of that wonderful natural force, called gravity. Gravity will help keep your stomach contents in your stomach. So the longer you can stay upright after eating, the more chance gravity has to do its job of keeping your stomach contents where they belong.

Of course, standing up for about half an hour to one hour after a meal is tiring as well as boring. The best way I can think to counteract the boredom is to go for a walk. I realize it may be a strange concept to some of you, but even by going for a stroll round your local mall, you're doing yourself a huge favor and really reducing the chance of you having heartburn on that day.

Yes it can be a strain to stop that instinctive reaction to jump into your car and go for a drive. People may also look at you strangely as you walk along the sidewalk. But when you look at it, would you rather get looked at strangely and decrease your chance of triggering heartburn/acid reflux? Or would you rather stay at home or jump in your car and increase your chance of triggering heartburn and enduring the suffering and discomfort that goes with it?

Like with all treatments in this site, it's a question of personal choice. The way I see it, trying it a few times to find out if it works for you isn't going to do much harm, and it has instead the potential to make you better. If it doesn't, then apart from a few strange looks this particular heartburn cure hasn't cost you a cent.

If it does work on the other hand, then you've found an ideal remedy which not only gets you out and about, but will also result in your feeling better, and might even increase your body tone.
