Acupuncture for Heartburn/Acid Reflux

Acupuncture has been used as a remedy for heartburn/acid reflux for thousands of years in traditional Chinese medicine.

Whilst some western scientists are still not convinced at the benefits of using acupuncture to treat any bodily ailment - probably primarily due to the fact that they can't understand how sticking a needle in someone can have any positive effect - it is nonetheless widely accepted by western medicine that acupuncture as a treatment does work and works very well. In fact, many people are turning to this form of treatment when they find that western medicine fails.

A great many people think that acupuncture is simply about sticking needles in a person's body. But in reality it is much more than that. I'll just stick to the basics.

Firstly, from a Chinese medicinal point of view, acupuncture is based on the principle of the flow of Chi, or Qi as it is also sometimes known, which is basically the life force that flows through the entire body. When you become ill, it's due to an imbalance in the yin and yang energy flowing through you.

Yin is the darker, female element which is usually passive, whilst yang is the brighter, masculine element which is usually active. You have probably seen pictures of Yin and Yang but not realized it. For example, where yin is symbolized with water and yang is symbolized by fire.

In most people, there is a balance in these positive and negative forces and the person remains healthy. As soon as the Yin and Yang elements become out of balance however, this is where according to the beliefs of Chinese medicine, a person becomes ill, as the imbalance in Yin and Yang can affect the flow of Chi throughout the body. Through the use of acupuncture, the Yin and Yang elements can be rebalanced, resulting in an uninterrupted flow of Chi throughout the body and in most cases, the person's health being fully restored.

From a scientific point of view, Chi could be viewed as the electrical currents in your body which are used to send messages from one part of your body to another. But how exactly acupuncture works from a western scientific point of view is not really understood. Doctors are introducing acupuncture more and more often though, either as a cure or in surgery as a replacement for regular anesthetic as they accept that it works even though they don't understand why.

Some of you may be really skeptical of this remedy, and to be honest I wouldn't blame you. You don't need to believe in Chi, and Yin and Yang though, in order to try acupuncture. There are a lot of things in the world that work, yet scientists have until now, been unable to find out why they work the way they do. It's just accepted that it works until more information can be uncovered to further our understanding.

If you decide to try acupuncture, your acupuncturist will be able to explain things much better and in more detail to you, than I can here. What I can do though, is to explain briefly what happens if you decide to book an acupuncture session.

There are certain points of the body where the flow of Chi is closer to the surface, and these are the points at which the needles are inserted. These needles are extremely fine in comparison to the regular sized needles that you are used to seeing.

Depending on the condition being treated, as well as the severity and the desired result, the needles can be inserted to different depths. Some people feel a little pin prick when the needles are inserted but generally there isn't any pain. After all, let's face it; if it was really that painful, then why would so many people want to undergo acupuncture treatment on a regular basis?

Most people require several sessions of acupuncture to bring their body elements back into balance. Regular follow up visits may be required in some cases to ensure that the condition doesn't reoccur.

When looking for an acupuncturist, it is important that they are correctly qualified, or else this treatment could do you more harm than good, in particular because needles are being inserted into your skin.

Acupuncture on the whole has numerous health benefits. It can not only alleviate heartburn/acid reflux symptoms, but it can also function as a preventative cure. At the same time, it can reduce your stress levels whilst improving other conditions that may be negatively affecting your health. Overall, it's a very good alternative cure-all treatment to try, rather than filling your body with the different pharmaceutical drugs for your different ailments.
